A.B.C. (Alterac Brings Capital)

A quick trip to the Alterac Mountains can often bring in a fairly hefty sum of gold if you know where to look and what to do while you’re there. Here are the sights and NPCs to visit if you want to know how to conduct a profitable trip to the mountains. We’re willing to bet that you haven’t heard of all of these…

Frost Oil

Deep in the Alterac Mountains, just beyond the Hillsbrad Foothills, high atop a wall guarded by once mighty ogres (seriously, they used to be elite) sits Bro’kin. Bro’kin, a Boooty Bay aligned goblin, is an otherwise unremarkable Alchemy vendor with the exception that he is the only NPC that sells the Frost Oil Recipe. This oil, while fairly outdated by current standards, is still highly profitable due to the fact that it is a required turn-in for an old leveling quest, Coolant Heads Prevail. This quest line is still completed by alts and veteran players alike because part of the chain awards a fairly unique trinket, the Nifty Stopwatch. This old trinket still has use for running long distances when you can’t mount. PVPers will like it for running flags; Bankers will like it for the occasional speedy mailbox/bank/AH run. The oil is also used, albeit a lot less frequently, for the old Dire Maul Tribute run.

The point is that you’ve got a fairly steady demand and a limited supply which means a good potential for profits. Pick up a few copies of this recipe from Bro’kin for less than a gold each and learn one (if you’re an alchemist) and sell the others for as much as you can in the AH. We typically wait until no one else has one posted to post ours and then we price it in the area of 30g each, one at a time.

Note that you’ll have to wait a few minutes before purchasing the recipe again as it is a limited supply item. So what do you do while you wait? Well we’re glad you asked…

Nodes

There are various ore and herb nodes appropriate to the level of the quests and mobs in the zone but the standout winner here is a key component of Frost Oil, Wintersbite. This herb can be picked by herbalists of requisite level and is found only in the snowy mountainous areas of this zone. The nice thing about this herb is that this is the ONLY area in which it grows, so if you have extras after crafting your own Frost Oils they can be sold for pretty high prices.

If you’re an alchemist/herbalist (or are friendly with one) you are now in the business of selling the Frost Oil recipe, the oil itself and the requisite herbs for crafting of the oil. You, essentially, control this tiny market. Savvy traders will even take steps to ensure that the price of the herbs remains formidably high such that even if other players buy the recipe from you they find it unprofitable to craft a bunch of the oils to compete with you. Muhaaaahaaaahaaaaa!

A Bonus Rare Engineering Schematic

But wait, there’s more… Did you notice the little guy in the cage during your Alterac Travels? Rizz Loosebolt is another obscure Alterac vendor, this time of the engineering variety. Like Bro’kin, he is friendly to both factions and sells various trade items but has one recipe in limited supply. This time it is the Ice Deflector Schematic which is a bit of a harder sell (there’s no quest associated with the crafted item) but it does sell to completionist Engineers (many haven’t even heard of this schematic). While you’re talking to Rizz, you might also want to buy out his supply of Gyrochronatoms which usually sell at a hefty markup in the AH to lazy players that don’t bother finding them elsewhere for less.

In an interesting example of WoW synergy, it is worth noting that Frost Oil is a required crafting component of the Ice Deflector and one of the Gyrochronatoms are required for completion of the afore mentioned Nifty Stopwatch quest line.

Something Else to Think About

Did you do your Alterac Valley quests? There are a whole slew of them available in your race’s AV cavern. Quest givers are located about half way down each tunnel. Both factions’ tunnels are located symmetrically on opposite sides of a path between the mountains that make up the border of the Hillsbrad Foothills and the Alterac Mountains. An informal poll amongst friends and family showed that most players, particularly those that started playing within the last two years, have never even heard of these quests. They are easy to do and are often completed along the course of attempting to win the AV battle. In fact, the hardest thing about completing these quests is simply finding the quest givers. So what are you waiting for? That’s some easy XP/gold right there? These quests might prove particularly lucrative to those players attempting to level with PVP as it just becomes an added bonus to what they are already doing.

You’ve now got yourself a little, agreeably unusual but highly profitable, farming circuit from the old world. It may seem counterintuitive to spend time visiting these old areas but we would argue otherwise, because who knows what the availability of these items, vendors, quests and even zones will be after the Cataclysm hits? May as well head out there now while you still can.

Abyssal Shatter Test Results

When we first received word that the Abyssal Shatter enchanting spell would be coming to the game we asked our resident enchanting expert if she would be interested in conducting some testing on the ability. She was keen on the idea so we sent a whole bunch of gold over and told her to get busy. A week later, when we hadn’t heard from her, we realized she took this to mean ‘free shopping spree’ and not ‘collect Abyss Crystals’ so we gave her more specific instructions and yet more gold with which to buy up inexpensive Crystals. Shortly after the Abyssal Shatter ability went live we had our results (and she still had her motorcycle). At any rate, the following are the results of our tests.

Crusader Orbs Rising in Price

…Well, slightly anyway. We’re seeing Crusader Orbs rising in price slightly across six auctions houses per faction side that we tested. That is to say that 12 out of 12 tested auction houses are showing increased prices as compared to our last assessment 10 days ago. We speculate that this rise in price is for the very reasons we initially predicted such movement, but we also do not believe that the orbs will return to their earlier levels of value (in the 3,000+ Gold range) ever. The orbs dipped on some servers to below 1,000 Gold for a few weeks and testing of these same servers showed that they are now going for 1,100 or more. Eventually, prices will hit a ceiling and come back down but, for now, they seem to be continuing to rise. With a deposit amount of only 36 Silver for a 48-hour auction, it may now be time to put up your Crusader Orbs for sale at prices slightly above current market value with long-term auction durations.

Drums of Caveat Emptor

In the wake of our report yesterday on the state of the 3.2.2 economy, we are receiving scattered reports from concerned readers about the charges on the Drums of Forgotten Kings and the Drums of the Wild. It would seem that some of the more nefarious sellers out there are using up 49 of the 50 charges on their drums and then reposting them with one charge left for the same price as fully charged drums.

UPDATE: We contacted our reader who alerted us to this issue and asked for more information about the scam and they clarified that they were scammed by drums offered in /trade chat. Apparently, the drums can be traded between players with less than full charges but NOT posted on the AH. Beware of deals that look too good to be true in the trade channel, they probably are.

This sort of scam is nothing new and we’ve seen it before with similar charged items. What is different is that the item is new and so some buyers are not quite used to the charge feature of the drums just yet. As with all items in the AH for sale or trade, the rule of thumb is Caveat Emptor. Watch what you’re doing and don’t make silly mistakes. And, no, a GM will not ‘fix’ this issue for you. Instead, may we suggest a few more appropriate ways for dealing with trading mistakes.

Just so we’re clear, both types of drums have fifty charges each when first crafted. Any less and you’re not buying a ‘new’ product. The Priest buff scroll, Runescroll of Fortitude, holds a single charge each but can stack in sizes of up to 20 per stack. There is still, as yet, no Mage scroll yet so the Vending Machines of WoW are safe for the time being.

On a side note, we love that the Blessing of Kings drums are called ‘…of Forgotten…’ since we’ve become so accustomed to grouping with pallis that forget to buff. Now if only they’d make a ‘Drums of Turn Off Crusader Aura Ya Nub’. Just a thought.

All About the Patch 3.2.2 Economy

Here are a few observations about the post-3.2.2 economy based on reader tips we’ve received and the WoWenomics teams’ own observations. We hope you find them useful. Feel free to share your own observations in the comments section.

A Big Ol’ Cup O’ Hurt

The Tankard O’ Terror, a BoE mace dropped by the Brewfest boss, is now being heavily sold in the AH and marketed in the /trade channel. The prices on this item range widely from the area of 1,000 gold to 3,000 or so. Tobold put up a good post explaining that he sees this item being BoE as an oversight on Blizzard’s part and suspects that the item may be made BoP in the near future. We don’t necessarily see that as happening and, in fact, are sellers of this item as opposed to buyers. Currently we will purchase the item at bid levels below 800 gold and sell at any above 1,100. A few of our team members have generated a bit of income with this strategy but longevity is limited. As the event progresses we expect the price to continue to drop as more and more players attain one and post it. Longer term, however, the price of these maces may increase significantly if similar holiday events do not yield comparable weapons. This is to say that, come six months from now, any remaining Tankard O’ Terrors might catch a pretty penny (copper?).

Conversely, sales of the Titansteel Bonecrusher are slowing significantly as players can attain the higher item level Brewfest mace for approximately the same (or lower) price.

On a personal note, I’m pretty sure I drank from that tankard more than once during college.

My Orbs Dropped

No, that wasn’t another personal note. Rather, Crusader Orbs have dropped sharply in price, as they are now attainable for 15 Emblems of Triumph. We actually predict there will be a slight bounce back in going rate for these items as two things happen:

  1. Players will be attracted to the lower price thereby driving up demand and
  2. Players will exhaust their reserve of emblems thereby slowing supply.

Runed Orbs have dropped slightly in price (presumably because more players are crafting the higher level items that require the recently inexpensive Crusader Orbs)

Frozen Orbs have actually increased in price albeit marginally. This is possibly due to content distraction and connection issues. We expect prices to drop back to ‘normal’ levels shortly.

Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the…

Two new types of drums were released. Drums of Forgotten Kings and Drums of the Wild both offer what were previously class specific raid buffs but are now available as a Leatherworking crafted item usable by even non-Leatherworkers. Prices for the drums are being reported to us as between 100 gold and 300 gold. These prices are expected to drop somewhat in the coming days as Leatherworkers flood the market.

Most servers tested showed a sharp increase in the price of the materials required to craft these items. If you are a farmer/supplier of such goods, now is certainly the time to sell.

It is worth noting that the buffs granted by these items do not stack with the class-offered versions of the same.

A Script for Profits

Scribes are reporting success in selling their version of the open-class raid buff, the Runescroll of Fortitude. Current price point on all servers tested varied from a low of just under 10 gold each to a high in the area of 22. This item is also usable by all classes and professions and, similar to the drums, does not stack with similar buffs granted by priests.

In other Inscription news, we’ve received scattered reports that the going rate for a few glyphs is on the rise. Specifically, glyphs that cater to skills in the Mage’s Arcane tree are on the rise (presumably this spec became more attractive given the buffs it received) and we’ve also heard the same (although to a lesser degree) about the Glyph of Seal of Command due to buffs to that specific skill. A few other glyphs have been redesigned and sales are moving upwards or downwards as the community reacts to the changes. If you are a scribe you may wish to reassess your pricing and adjust accordingly.

All Your Buffs Are Belong to Us!

Players would be well advised to note that the buffs granted by the aforementioned drums and scrolls will stack with each other. Further, and perhaps more importantly, the buffs stack with those granted from consumables. Thus, you could theoretically use both types of drums, the scroll and an elixir of both varieties (or a flask) all at once- even while soloing. Take it away min/maxers…

One final comparative note is that the buff granted by the drums is 30 minutes long whereas the scroll grants a 60-minute stamina buff.

A Gem of an Opportunity

Raw gems continue to rise even while the prices of the cut versions stabalize. One area we’ve observed strong gains in price with Armor Penetration gems. This is quite probably a result of players trying to compensate for a nerf to this statistic that was introduced by Blizzard with this patch. Here is a full list of Armor Pen gems to help you plan accordingly. It should be noted that this rise was somewhat unexpected by our team. Rather, we would have predicted a decline in the price of these gems since their value has been nerfed. Perhaps that price drop is still to come.

The Chef’s Hat

Cooking can be incredibly profitable. Whether you’re simply completing the daily cooking quest for a few gold plus converting and selling herbs for the lucrative proceeds or you’re pursuing additional opportunities for greater profits through cooked goods, cooking can bring in the gold. The real bonus is that this gold is above and beyond that generated from your main professions since cooking is a secondary skill. So, assuming you’ve pursued the opportunity of cooking, should you purchase the Chef’s Hat?

Chef’s Hat Facts:

Worth It?

The most direct route to answering the question of whether or not the hat is worth it depends on the value of the hat on your server and the amount of cooking that you perform. To find the answer to the question of your server’s cost, we have to examine the going rate of Northern Spices. The AH cost of spices vary from server to server but, on average, we’ve found their cost to be in the area of 1.5 gold each. So assuming the cost of each spice is 1.5 gold, and the hat costs 1,000 spices (or 100 cooking tokens) the base opportunity cost of the hat is 1,500 gold. Now, this is hardly scientific since there are several variables. Namely, there are more profitable ways to spend your spices if you also have meat and a savvy trader will have the ability to get spices much cheaper. However, 1,500 G is a good base price to start your hat price evaluation from.

Is it worth 1,500 gold to save up to 3.5 seconds on cooking per item? That depends how much you cook. The dedicated chefs in our group claim to cook hundreds of items in a single session and swear by the hat. They say that, while the cost of the hat may be 1,500 gold or more, all the time saved is worth significantly more.

So purchasing the hat is certainly worth it if you cook regularly. If you’re just a casual chef, then it probably isn’t for you and you’re best off selling your spices. However, if that phrase made your cringe, and the very thought of selling your precious spices made you shudder because you cook in the game regularly, you might want to think about getting yourself a new hat.

The Pampered WoW Chef

Finally, if you are truly a dedicated chef you’ve got to go all the way and get yourself an nice weapon to fit the part. There are a few options out there but our favorites are the baker version and the butcher variety. Actually, if you wanted to take it to the extreme you can find entire WoW cooking outfits to match your obsession.

Side note: This hat was initially intended to be a cosmetic, or ‘flavor’, item. Blizzard said as much in a forum post but ultimately changed their minds after pressure from the community. From a WoWenomics perspective, we would not have advised purchase of the hat if it had remained just for show.

The Best Bank Alt

The WoWenomics team was asked to brainstorm their thoughts on what makes the best bank or Auction House alt. Here are the a few of their ideas:

  1. Private Guild
    First and foremost, a bank alt should have their own guild. We won’t get too deep into the specifics of why beyond saying that it is the most inexpensive storage solution for mass amounts of materials. Bag slots per capita are cheaper when paying for a brand new guild and a few bank tabs then when purchasing additional personal bank slots and crafting or purchasing large bags. Further, you can better categorize your materials by naming and selecting an appropriate icon for tabs (herbs, ore, gems, consumables, etc.). Zekta’s got a nice write up of the benefits to creating your own guild. Definitely worth a look.
  2. Speed
    A selling alt should have fast movement speed. Faster than other players anyway. The idea is that you often have to run back and for the between mail box, the bank and the AH. You want a player that has skills that enable this sort of fast movement. If its something you’re going to be doing lots of, you want to save as many seconds as possible.
  3. Professions
    No need for a gathering skill. Your bank alt will be spending the majority of their time in capital cities so there should be very little gathering involved. You may wish to choose gathering professions while leveling your bank alt and then switch to crafting professions later after you’ve attained the desired level. If you can’t let go of your farmer, we’ve advocated previously that your main should be your farmer as that toon will be spending the majority of its time out in the world. That said, it we understand if your play style prohibits that type of setup. The only thing we min/max around here is our wallets. Just remember that there’s no need to have a gathering skill on your banker. It’s a wasted profession. Ideally your profession should be something that has a neat cool down that provides a unique benefit every day or so also. This way, on days that you can’t really play, you can at least log in for a few seconds on a single toon (one that already has all your materials) and activate your cooldowns and log right back out.
  4. Additional Skills
    We like the idea of maximizing profits. If you’re going to be on your bank alt standing around the cities, why not choose a class that allows you to benefit from an additional skill. Rogues that provide lockbox opening services and water boys that also sell ports come immediately to mind. Both of these skills are fairly easy to level although mages have the edge in terms of easy skill leveling. At any rate, choosing a class that grants an additional, albeit negligible, amount of income is a nice bonus.
  5. Reputation
    This one is overlooked most often by amateur players. If your banker toon is also going to be doing a lot of your AH buying and selling, it will pay off to have a toon that is at least honorable with the city in which you are conducting business. Raise your reputation with this toon and save gold over the long term.
  6. Limit Spending
    There is no need for your bank toon to have expensive mounts, toys or BoE gear. Bear in mind that this toon will mostly sit in the cities and generate gold. Don’t bother buying expensive stuff that won’t get used and instead save the money for upgrades on your other toons. Remember that saving gold is as important as generating gold when it comes to profits.
